Bad Boys 4 filming has now wrapped, as confirmed by a new set image of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. After the success of Bad Boys For Life in 2020, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah return to helm a fourth installment in the popular action franchise. The upcoming sequel features the return of Smith as Mike Lowery and Lawrence and Marcus Burnett, roles they first played back in Michael Bay's 1995 franchise starter.
As the Bad Boys 4 release date approaches, Smith shares a new image on his Instagram account, confirming that filming has now wrapped.
"WRAPPED!" Smith writes in his caption, accompanying an image of him and Lawrence fist-bumping. "Nothin' but magic every time I'm with my guy. See ya'll June 7 for [Bad Boys 4]."
So far, there's been no official confirmation regarding whether the upcoming installment will be the last one. Neither Smith nor Lawrence, however, in their posts about the film, have given any indication that they will be hanging up their hats as Mike and Marcus. If Bad Boys 4 is intended to close out the franchise, it's likely that this would have been communicated in some form by now, especially since the "One Last Hurrah" approach often plays into the promotion and marketing of a film.
What will determine whether a Bad Boys 5 happens probably depends on how well the upcoming installment performs. After the first movie became a hit in 1995, the sequel in 2003 was not as well received and the franchise then lay dormant for almost 20 years. 2020's Bad Boy For Life was something of a surprise critically (see the chart below) and commercially ($426.5 million earned worldwide), and it really breathed new life into the franchise, despite the title suggesting that it could serve as the final installment.
Title | Rotten Tomatoes Critics' Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
Bad Boys (1995) | 43% | 78% |
Bad Boys 2 (2003) | 23% | 78% |
Bad Boys For Life (2020) | 76% | 96% |
Smith is now 55 while Lawrence is 58, meaning they're certainly not yet too old to return as Mike and Marcus in another sequel if the upcoming film performs well. TheBad Boys For Lifeendingopens the door for an exciting story moving forward, and it's possible that the new film will do the same, providing a sense of finality while paving the way for a new story. It remains to be seen whetherBad Boys 4will be the last one, but the film is evidently one step closer to hitting theaters.
I loved the first Bad Boys movie and Bad Boys For Life (IMHO the latter should have been the name of the recently wraped film). However post slap are people ready to see Will Smith back on the big screen?
