Will Smith famously slapped Chris Rock in the face live on stage at the 94th Annual Academy Awards after the comedian made an insensitive joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's bald head.

Will Smith says he "found my voice" while working on his recently released track "Work of Art," featuring Russ and the Oscar-winning actor’s son, Jaden.
The song is Smith’s third single of the year following the Bad Boys: Ride or Die soundtrack cut "Light ‘Em Up" and last month’s "You Can Make It," the latter of which saw him enlisting Ye’s Sunday Service Choir. "You Can Make It" and "Work of Art," thematically speaking, have a lot in common, with their shared perspectives on moving through life’s challenges.
While neither Smith nor Russ directly mentioned anything slaptroversial in a newly shared video interview filmed at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid, both bonded on the topic of "trials and tribulations," with Russ pointing to Will’s lyrics on their song as having been particularly resonant for him.
"It was really the first time in my life since childhood that I got the shit kicked out of me," Smith said. "You know, I had a run of the gods. It’s like, it was really the first time experiencing what it’s like to get stomped."
In any case, 2024 has been very kind to Smith, thanks in no small part to the massive box office success of the latest Bad Boys.
Elsewhere in his chat with Russ, Smith spoke more generally about the blamelessness of the song’s perspective and the key admission he says is at the heart of the lyric, "I am a saint, but if you touch, I am a savage." See more up top.
We’re now a little more than three years away from marking the 30th anniversary of Big Willie Style, Smith’s debut studio album featuring truly ubiquitous hits like "Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It" and "Miami." For his surprise appearance at Coachella earlier this year, Smith threw it back to 1997 by rolling out a performance of his Men in Black soundtrack hit, complete with a post-performance deployment of his neuralyzer.
Smith's new album, his first since Lost and Found back in 2005, is expected soon. Below, revisit the previously released "You Can Make It."
