It's been a pretty busy week for RuPaul's Drag Race icon Shea Couleé. In addition to the recent announcement earlier this week that she would be joining the MCU (most likely playing drag queen superhero Shade) in the upcoming Ironheart series on Disney+, the performer has also dropped the Janet Jackson-esque visual to songs Let Go & Your Name.
"My vision for this music video was to create a fantasy world that felt like an abstract nightclub from the future, but with a lot of 80’s Janet Jackson flair," she said.
Directed by Couleé, the music video channels Janet Jackson with tight choreo, accompanied by buttery 80's vocals reminiscent of Luther Vandross, Jody Whatley and Shalamar. The six-minute video begins with “Let Go” in a neon warehouse with a color-changing LED ceiling, and in “Your Name” we are taken on a flirty chase with Couleé’s love interest.
Here's what she said about working with singer/producer Sam Sparro and musician GESS on the songs: “For years, I have been working hard to cultivate music that harkens back to what I grew up with. Before this, I had always aligned myself with contemporary music. It took me a while to finally find the right producers and collaborators to perfect this sound and all that goes into it—the energy, the texture, the essence—music with a lot of heart.”
I love what Shea has given us, and I hope we can get an album out of her soon before she gets locked into filming Ironheart.
