UPGRADE TV SERIES IS IN THE WORKS

One of my favorite movies to come out in 2018 was Upgrade. So you have no idea how excited I got when I heard that Blumhouse is developing a TV series based on the cult hit.

According to Deadline, Upgrade the series picks up a few years after the events of the film and broadens the universe with an evolved version of STEM and a new host – imagining a world in which the government repurposes STEM to help curb criminal activity.

Leigh Whannell (Saw, The Invisible Man), who wrote and directed the 2018 film of the same name, is serving as co-creator and executive producer of the show.

The original film starred Logan Marshall-Green, Betty Gabriel and Harrison Gilbertson. After his wife is killed during a brutal mugging that also leaves him paralyzed, Grey Trace (Marshall-Green) is approached by a billionaire inventor with an experimental cure in the form of a computer chip implant called STEM. The implant provides its host with heightened physical abilities, allowing Grey to exact revenge on those responsible for his wife’s death. The film was produced for $5 million and grossed more than $16 million at the global box office. It was also the recipient of the 2018 SXSW Audience Award.

I’m curious to see who they will cast in the role, but I hope they can get Marshall-Green back. Maybe they can, since he was set to play the play the Matthew McConaughey role in The Lincoln Lawyer TV series on CBS. But due to COVID-19, the show, which was given a full season order was canceled by the network before shooting even began. Even though the plot will center around a new character, I’m curious to find out what happened with Grey’s character. Plus, I can’t wait to explore the world of augmented criminals much further.
