The gays are about to make history. The upcoming Billy Eichner comedy Bros is already making history by being the first mainstream rom-com (via Universal) to feature openly gay actors playing an openly gay couple.
Now comes word (via THR) that the film will feature an all-queer principle cast, meaning even the straight parts will be portrayed by members of the rainbow mafia.
Eichner, who co-wrote the script with Nicholas Stoller, will star opposite Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters). They’ll be joined in the cast by TS Madison (Zola), the transgender author of A Light Through the Shade: An Autobiography of a Queen ; Miss Lawrence, a gender non-conforming performer previously seen in Star, Fashion Queens and The United States vs. Billie Holiday; Symone, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 13; Guillermo Diaz (Scandal, Weeds ); and Guy Branum, who previously was a writer on Eichner’s Billy on the Street.
“I could not be more proud or excited about the historic nature of the all openly LGBTQ+ cast of Bros. After queer actors have spent decades watching straight actors capitalize both artistically and professionally by playing LGBTQ+ characters, it is a long overdue dream come true to be able to assemble this remarkable, hilarious cast,” Eichner told the publication. “And while Bros may be the first of its kind in several ways, my real hope is that it is only the first of many opportunities for openly LGBTQ+ ensembles to shine and show the world all we are capable of as actors, beyond just being the wacky sidekick, token queer or a straight movie star’s ‘gay best friend.’ And beyond all of that, this cast is fucking hysterical and you’re going to love them.”
I will admit that I’m not a big fan of romantic comedies, but after checking out the cast, and seeing the history that is about to be made, I’m definitely intrigued to check this film out once it’s released.
Bros is slated to hit theaters on Aug. 12, 2022.
