TRAILER TRASH: LOVECRAFT COUNTRY

Here is your first look at Lovecraft Country, the chilling new series coming to HBO and HBO Max this August from producers Jordan Peele (Get Out, Candyman) and JJ Abrams (Super 8, Rise of Skywalker).

Executive produced by series creator Misha Green (Underground), the series, based on the 2016 Matt Ruff novel of the same name, looks to explore the connection between the Gothic horror fiction of H.P. Lovecraft, and racism in the United States circa the Jim Crow era.

“The series follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) as he joins up with his friend Letitia (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father (Michael Kenneth Williams). This begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.”

I’m a huge fan of Jordan’s and JJ’s work, and based on the chilling trailer, I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this, especially since HBO did such a great job with Watchmen. I’m also a huge fan of when filmmakers successfully mix the horrors of what goes on in the real world with supernatural metaphors.
