Twenty-six year ago, The Matrix pushed the boundaries of cinema with its bullet time sequences, as well as its melding of philosophy, martial arts and technology. Now, the immersive technology company Cosm is hoping the genre-defining film can once again push the limits of visual storytelling.

Cosm has inked a multi-film pact with The Matrix studio Warner Bros., as well as Little Cinema, which specializes in transforming films and TV properties into live events. Together, the companies will bring The Matrix to Cosm’s venues in Los Angeles and Dallas on June 6. It is billed as a “shared reality” experience.

The film will screen as normal, but the audience will also be surrounded by an 87-ft diameter LED dome, which will display new elements inspired by the film. The goal is for the audience to feel as though it is in the universe of The Matrix.

Since opening its first two venues last year, Cosm has largely focused on sporting events, with the new partnership signaling Hollywood ambitions. Its Los Angeles-area venue is located near SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, and tickets will go on sale in mid-April.

“As we built this business, we were confident that live sports would thrive in Shared Reality, transporting fans to the sidelines of their favorite sport,” said Jeb Terry, CEO and President at Cosm. “Now with The Matrix, we’re expanding into cinema, transporting fans into the scenes of their favorite films. Instead of simply watching Neo enter the Matrix, audiences will go with him, experiencing the journey like never before.”

In the years since the coronavirus pandemic ravaged theater-going, theater chains as companies such as Cosm have worked to create experiences that are not replicable at home. Audiences have shown a willingness to pay for these experiences, even as sales for traditional movie screens lag behind pre-pandemic numbers.

The Matrix, starring Keanu Reeves as a hacker who discovers humanity has been living inside a computer simulation, spawned two sequels from directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski. Reeves and Lana Wachowski return for 2021’s The Matrix: Resurrections, and a new film is in the works from director Drew Goddard.

“Having been a part of The Matrix big screen experience since the first film completely transported audiences with its groundbreaking filmmaking technology and truly immersive storytelling, I can say on behalf of all of us at Warner Bros. that we wouldn’t miss this opportunity to partner with Cosm and Little Cinema to deliver yet another first to moviegoers,” said Warners distribution boss Jeff Goldstein.

Little Cinema founder Jay Rinsky noted the collaboration has created “an experience where the film remains the hero, and audiences are invited to question their own sense of what is real in the world surrounding it.”
