Word on the street (the street being scooper Daniel Richtman's Patreon page) that a remake of the 1998 alien invasion horror film The Faculty is in the works.
Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror, From Dusk Til Dawn, Machete) directed the original film from a scipt by Kevin Williamson (Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer). No word on who will direct the rumored remake, but word is that Rodriguez will be on board as a producer.
There's also no word if Kevin Williamson will be on board as a producer like he has been with the later Scream films.
The Faculty has the following synopsis: To the students at Harrington High, the principal and her posse of teachers have always been a little odd, but lately they’ve been behaving positively alien. Controlled by otherworldly parasites, the faculty try to infect students one by one. Cheerleader Delilah, football player Stan, drug dealer Zeke, and new girl Marybeth team up with some of their other classmates to fight back against the invaders.
Elijah Wood, Laura Harris, Josh Hartnett, Clea DuVall, Jordana Brewster, Shawn Hatosy, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Piper Laurie, Christopher McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Robert Patrick. Usher Raymond, Jon Stewart, and Daniel von Bargen star.
Out of the plethora of films that came out during the late 90's horror resurgence, The Faculty is one of my all-time favorite films. What I particularly loved about the film is that Kevin took all the classic teen stereotypes of The Breakfast Club, and turned them on it's head.
It was also one of the things that I loved about the original Scream. He took all the tropes of the slasher film genre and changed how final girls were perceived.
Honestly, I would prefer a sequel to pick up 25 years later rather than a remake, and bring some of the characters from the original film back with an entirely new cast.
The Faculty is perfect just the way it is. No need for a remake. However if they can come up with a pretty good story with compelling characters than I'm here for a remake.
