Swizz Beatz & Timbaland Face Backlash After Announcing ‘Verzuz’ Deal w/ Elon Musk’s Twitter

Swizz Beatz and Timbaland have agreed on a deal to distribute Verzuz through Elon Musk's platform, X (formerly Twitter). The two announced the move during an activation in Cannes, France on Wednesday, as caught by Billboard.

Verzuz, which began in 2020 and quickly rose to prominence, has now come under the exclusive distribution umbrella of X. This move follows Swizz Beatz and Timbaland's reclamation of full ownership from Triller earlier this year. "We are beyond thrilled to have found the best partner for Verzuz. Not only are we excited to have Verzuz on X, we're excited to help X build the biggest entertainment company in the world," said Swizz Beatz.

Despite Swizz and Timbaland's excitement, the deal has not been without its detractors. Many social media users have voiced concerns about partnering with Elon Musk, raising issues related to alleged discriminatory business practices associated with Musk. Some critics argue that the show, a hit during the pandemic, should have ended alongside it, doubting its relevance in a post-pandemic world.

Verzuz was conceived as a means to connect music fans during the Covid-19 lockdown, featuring iconic matchups such as Brandy vs Monica and DMX vs Snoop Dogg. It generated over 100 million live views and 70 billion impressions across 40 episodes, showcasing the high stakes and popularity involved. However, it temporarily halted last year amid controversies surrounding its previous parent company, Triller.

This new deal is not just about distribution but aims at strategic growth, with performances expected to broadcast to an audience of over 550 million active users on X. According to Timbaland, "Our goal has always been to bring Verzuz to the world which we can now do bigger than ever."

The collaboration with X signals the potential for pioneering content experiences. Linda Yaccarino, X's CEO, commented, "X is so proud to partner with trailblazing creators, artists, and entrepreneurs Swizz Beatz & Timbaland. Our platform stands at the forefront of innovation, and Verzuz defines the essence of an innovative content experience."

As Swizz Beatz and Timbaland embark on this new chapter, the anticipation for the next Verzuz matchup grows. Whether greeted with cheers or skepticism, the move undeniably amplifies the stakes in the imaginative intersections of tech and entertainment.

No shade, but all money ain't good money. I'm glad they get to keep full control, but why put something on a platform run by an Apartheid apologist and someone who supports black on black crime?

What's worse is that they had the nerve to announce this mess on Juneteenth.

I'm sure there are people who are looking forward to VERZUZ coming back, but in my gut I felt like most of the naysayers -- that we've pretty much moved on from watching a VERZUZ deathmatch.

This just goes to show that these millionaires who move within the culture, don't really care about the culture. All they care about is lining their pockets.
