MTV has unleashed the official trailer for RuPaul's Drag Race season 16, and honestly I don't know how I feel about the upcoming season.
Fourteen queens will compete for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” and a cash prize of $200k.
The previously announced cast of queens include Amanda Tori Meating (Los Angeles, CA), Dawn (Brooklyn, NY), Geneva Karr (Brownsville, TX), Hershii LiqCour-Jeté (Los Angeles, CA), Megami (Brooklyn, NY), Mhi’ya Iman Le’Paige (Miami, FL), Mirage (Las Vegas, NV), Morphine Love Dion (Miami, FL), Nymphia Wind (Taiwan/NY), Plane Jane (Boston, MA), Plasma (New York, NY), Q (Kansas City, MO), Sapphira Cristál (Philadelphia, PA), and Xunami Muse (New York, NY).
While I love that we have a multitude of Latin queens, and five New York City queens competing (we haven't had this many from the Big Apple since season 10), I don't like the idea that they're having the queens rate each other.
I feel like the show is getting to the point that RuPaul doesn't want to do the one job she gets paid the big bucks to do.
It shouldn't be up to the up and coming queens to decide each other's fate. I also heard some tea that they changed up the original Rupocalypse concept due to the current political climate, which is why the promo photos we've been seeing has had a lot of fans scratching their heads.
I also heard some tea about season 16 queen Plain Jane and accusations that she allegedly groped someone at a club performance without their permission, and that Dragula season 5 queen Jay Kay witnessed the incident.
I will need more information on that before I jump to any conclusions, because there's context to these kind of incidences, especially when there's drinking involved.
I do love that they're bringing back immunity for the winners, which we had during the earlier seasons.
As for the guest judges, we've got some pretty big names ready to grace the panel, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Charlize Theron, Becky G, Isaac Mizrahi, Adam Shankman, Icona Pop, Jamal Sims, Joel Kim Booster, Kaia Gerber, Kelsea Ballerini, Kyra Sedgwick, Law Roach, Mayan Lopez and Ronan Farrow.
RuPaul returns to host and serve on the judges panel with Michelle Visage, Carson Kressley, Ross Mathews and Ts Madison.
