Now that Stephen Dunn has revived Queer As Folk over at Peacock, the showrunner now has his sights set on Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
The QAF reboot features a more diverse cast and is set in New Orleans, and if you've watched the eight-episode first season Buffy is even referenced in the show, with character Julian (Ryan O' Connor) being a huge fan of the show.
He even convinces Noah (Johnny Sibilly) to watch a couple of episodes with him as a way to cheer him up.
Here's what he told Express:
“That is a dream of mine, Buffy is my lifeblood,” he said. “Julian definitely does channel a little bit of Vince, it’s a huge part of it.”
Dunn is such a huge fan of Buffy that the character is on his phone case to this day.
“I think sci-fi and that kind of storytelling is so steeped in queerness, despite the fact that it often hasn’t always been super obvious,” Dunn said. “Shows like Buffy for me… you know, Willow was one of my introductions to queerness outside of Queer as Folk.”
I'm going to be honest and say I didn't really like the Queer As Folk reboot. While I welcome the diverse cast of queer characters on the new version, I felt the show failed to capture the essence of what made the original so great. The original soundtrack was memorable, and while I did like some of the songs in the reboot, it wasn't enough for me to listen to the soundtrack on repeat.
I didn't feel the dynamic between the group of characters like I felt between the group of friends from the original. Outside of the Pulse-like shooting that plagues Babylon, what really draws these characters together besides their trauma?
Also I felt Brodie and Mingus were the most unlikable, annoying characters on the show, so do I trust Stephen Dunn taking on Buffy, another series that I hold dear to my heart? I'm not so convinced that he can pull it off.
I remember hearing a few years ago that they were planning on having writer/producer Monica Owusu-Breen as a showrunner for a Buffy reboot with a black actress playing the iconic slayer.
I haven't heard anything else since the announcement, so I hope they continue to go that route, but I'm not so sure I want to see Dunn touching the seven-season series. Then again with Dunn showing interest (how were the ratings on QAF?) maybe it will help get the ball rolling.
