Like many TV shows and films, Pose was six days into shooting their third season when Miss Rona forced Hollywood to press pause on all productions.
In an interview with Variety, actorvist Indya Moore, who plays Naomi Campbell-fierce modelle Angel Evangelista gave her thoughts on Pose shutting down during the pandemic.
“When production paused, I wasn’t shocked — I knew it would happen — but it was a bittersweet moment for me. On the one hand, if anyone had gotten sick, it surely would have spread fast. On the other hand, most folks working on a production are living paycheck to paycheck. So I was worried about how they are going to survive.” Moore, who has actively been involved in the recent protests both in-person and online, went on to bring attention to the fact that some of these working on production are having a “really rough time.”
While Hollywood has been talking about resuming production in July, I began to wonder since many of the show’s episodes contain moments of intimacy and scenes involving large crowds (for the ballroom sequences), how will they make season 3 work when we still don’t have a cure for Miss Rona?
“‘Things like kissing — we will likely forgo those moments,” said the show’s co-creator Steven Canals. “The place on our show where the biggest impact will be felt will be the ball scenes: Those scenes have 125 to 150 background actors. That’s tricky, because that’s such an important and critical part of our show and the narrative. We’re just, only now, having conversations of ‘Is there a world where we forgo these things?’” Hopefully not.
The ballroom scenes are the foundation of Pose, and I sincerely hope that they can find another way to tell queer stories of color without having to rely on the ballroom sequences.
Pose season 2 hits Netflix on June 11. You can check out Indya’s interview with Variety here.
