Legendary music producer Nile Rodgers sat down for a virtual interview with Sirius XM, and spilled the tea on pop icon Madonna. During the conversation, he gave praise to the singer for her contributions to feminism, and even spoke of why she was excluded on the song We Are The World.
You know what’s funny? I never thought of the question as to why Madonna was never included on WATW, until this very story came across my desk. I do find it quite strange that she wasn’t included, especially since she was a huge pop star at the time.
I really wanted Nile to reveal who didn’t want Madonna on the song? Was it Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones who decided she couldn’t be part of the song? If Cyndi Lauper could be part of it, then I don’t see why Madonna couldn’t.
I wonder if it had anything to do with the media and labels pitting Madonna and Cyndi Lauper against each other, since at the time they looked at Cyndi as a serious musician with a long-term mainstream career, and Madonna as nothing more than a flash in the pan.
Madonna did end up getting the last laugh. On May 11 1985, Crazy For You hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the U.S. for one week. The track had spent the two previous weeks in the runner-up position behind We Are The World.
