Liam Payne 'Jumped from the Balcony of His Room' Before His Death at 31, Authorities Say

His body hasn't even been cold on the slab for more than 24 hours, but more information is coming out by the hour in regards to the death of One Direction singer Liam Payne.

Liam Payne "jumped from the balcony" of his hotel room before his death at age 31, local authorities confirm to PEOPLE.

Pablo Policicchio, the communications director for the Buenos Aires Security Ministry, shared the update — which was also published by the Associated Press — following the One Direction singer's death on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

Payne was pronounced dead after falling multiple stories at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Policía Federal Argentina confirmed to PEOPLE.

Police had been called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. local time and Payne was said to have died shortly afterward.

In comments translated from Spanish, Alberto Crescenti (the head of SAME, Buenos Aires' public emergency medical services system), said that Payne suffered "a fracture at the base of the skull" following the fall, per Argentine news channel TN.

An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, local police told PEOPLE, adding that an autopsy will be conducted.

Per a 911 call translated by outlets including Sky News and the BBC, the hotel's chief receptionist alerted police after becoming worried about Payne's behavior.

According to a translated La Nacion transcript, the worker said the musician was intoxicated and presumed he was "under the influence of alcohol and drugs," insisting that someone needed to come "urgently" to the location. Throughout the call, Payne's name was not thought to have been mentioned.

Per Sky News, the worker mentioned that the guest's life might be "in danger" because he was "in a room with a balcony."

"We're afraid he could do something that threatens his life," the manager — who said his name was "Esteban" — added, according to the outlet.

The BBC transcript also stated that the worker said Payne had been "trashing the entire room" before his death.

People around the world continue to pay tribute to Payne, who shot to fame alongside his One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson on The X-Factor U.K. back in 2010. Styles, Malik, Horan and Tomlinson are yet to comment.

Payne is survived by his 7-year-old son Bear Grey, whom he shares with his ex, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl.

So sad.
