Just days after it was announced that due to Miss Rona holding up everyone work-wise including many Hollywood productions, John Wick Chapter 4 has been moved from May, 2021 to May 27, 2022. The actor was four weeks into shooting The Matrix 4 when Miss Rona forced all businesses to shut down and for everyone to go into quarantine After he was finished shooting The Matrix he was set to go int fight and gun training for John Wick 4, but since we have no idea when we’ll be able to open up businesses again, movies are being shifted to give the actor time to prepare.
Meanwhile, Lionsgate is looking to expand on the John Wick universe, and not only are we getting a TV series based on The Continental, but the studio is looking to turn the story of a ballerina/assassin, a world we got a glimpse of in John Wick 3: Parabellum into a franchise of it’s own. According to Daniel Richtman via his Patreon, the studio is interested in actress Chloë Grace Mortetz in the lead role.
As some of you may know, Moretz is no stranger to action, with her scene stealing role as the foul-mouthed, gun-toting vigilante Hit Girl in Kick Ass.
According to the casting breakdown of the film, which is entitled Ballerina, by the way, Moretz is being eyed to play a character named Rooney Brown, an orphan that grew up within The Director’s crime family, one of the organizations that serve the Wick world’s High Table. Rooney is a trained global killer but exhibits a strict moral conscience and won’t kill anyone that she believes doesn’t deserve death. The spin-off will focus on Rooney coming out of retirement to target an rival organization that slaughtered her family.
The breakdown does reveal that the antagonist of the movie is a character named Mayor Elias Muller, the leader of a sleepy little town named Sunnyvale. As the grid suggests, Mayor Muller is “a sociopathic killer that leads his town full of assassins,” attempting to protect them form discovery by the outside world. It looks like this town — Sunnyvale — is the organization that Rooney Brown goes toe-to-toe with throughout the flick.
The film is set to be directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution, Live Free or Die Hard) from a script written by Shay Hatten and Basil Iwanyk.
Word on the street is that the studio is in talks for The Director (Anjelica Huston) and John Wick (Keanu Reeves) to make cameos in the film, since they are listened on the casting breakdown.
It hasn’t been confirmed, but I think casting Chloë would be the logical choice to play the lead in Ballerina, since on the strength of Hit Girl we know she’s capable of doing the action stuff. Chloë was one of my favorite characters in Kick-Ass, and based on her appearance in both Kick-Ass films you’ll get the fanboys and girls out of the house to support this film.
I love that Lionsgate is looking to expand the Wick universe, (and I don’t want to come across as ageist), because quiet as it’s kept Keanu can’t keep doing these films forever, since he’s pushing towards 60. So by expanding the universe with different characters who exist in the Wick world in my opinion is a good thing.
I don’t know what it is, but I love watching women kick ass on the big and small screen, especially if those women happen to be assassins. So bring on Ballerina, The Continental TV series and hopefully we’ll be getting a spin-off of Halle Berry’s character Sofia, who was definitely a standout in Parabellum.
