Singer Keri Hilson appeared on The Breakfast Club this morning (April 9), and while spilling the tea on a plethora of topics such as her mental health, she also addressed the Turnin' Me On remix, a diss track some believed was aimed at Beyoncé and Ciara.
The Timbaland protege is currently promoting her comeback single ‘Bae,‘ and forthcoming album ‘We Need to Talk,’ which drops on April 18.
While speaking with Charlamagne Tha God, DJ Envy, and Loren LoRosa, Keri revealed that she didn’t actually write the record herself and felt pressured by her then-boss, Polow da Don, to record it. At the time, she was signed to him under a joint venture with Timbaland and Interscope Records. According to Keri, Polow threatened not to release her album if she refused to perform the track.
“It’s a regret. But not in the way people think. That’s a song I actually didn’t write. Those are not my words. I was on tour, Polow [Da Don] wanted me to do a remix to Turning Me On. He produced the record. Because I was on tour with Lil Wayne, I wasn’t able to lay anything down. he had been on me for a couple of weeks, [saying] we need to do a remix.”
“He had another writer in our camp at the time…he had her write this. He played it for me. Meanwhile I’m thinking I was coming in to write a remix to ‘Turnin’ Me On.’ Automatically, I was like, ‘I’m not saying that.’ That was my position. I’m an athlete. I am competitive. But I’m not nasty, I’m a finesse player. I don’t look at things like that.”
Keri described Polow as being “forceful” in pushing the record, despite her clear objections. She shared:
“I was in tears. I was crying. I was adamant that I did not want to do that.”
“I was super young. I felt I had no power. I felt I had no choice.”
Keri and Bey have since squashed their beef, but Polow using Keri as a puppet to do his nasty work is beyond distasteful.
