With production already underway on Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, the one question that’s still been hanging in the air is whether or not Jennifer Love Hewitt will be returning to the franchise. Freddie Prinze Jr. has already been confirmed to reprise his role from the original movies, but Love Hewitt’s role in the movie has been uncertain.

Jennifer Love Hewitt took to social media this morning to announce that she has officially closed a deal to return to the franchise. She joins her former co-star Freddie Prinze Jr along with new castmembers Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing the follow-up to the horror film franchise, which is written by Sam Lansky and Kaytin Robinson off a draft by Leah McKendrick.

Neal Moritz is producing. Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 18, 2025.

The original film follows four young friends (played by Prinze, Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe) bound by a tragic accident who are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.

I Know What You Did Last Summer, loosely based on the Lois Duncan novel of the same name, was a hit that led to the development of the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which premiered in 1998. A direct-to-video third installment of the franchise, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), is considered a stand-alone sequel as the story diverged from the first two installments and had no original cast reprising their roles.

Hewitt can currently be seen co-starring on the Fox show 9-1-1, created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk. Next, she will be seen starring, directing and executive producing the Lifetime film The Holiday Junkie. She starred in, executive produced and directed several episodes of her network series Ghost Whisperer, which ran for five seasons from 2005-2010, and starred in and executive produced the cable film The Client List, for which she received a Golden Globe nomination.

She is represented by Vault Entertainment and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman LLP.
