Jenna Ortega Says Women ‘Should Have Our Own Franchises’ and Not Just Spinoffs: ‘I Don’t Want Jamie Bond. I Want to See Another Badass’

Jenna Ortega is calling for more female-led franchises over female-led spinoffs.

In a new interview with MTV, the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” star reflected on joining the sequel to one of Tim Burton’s most beloved films, which remains a surreal experience for her. At one point though, host Josh Horowitz asked for her opinion on other sequels, and when titles should be left alone.

He specifically joked about the idea of an “Edward Scissorhands” sequel, which could hypothetically be called “Edith Scissorhands.” And though Ortega and her costar Catherine O’Hara had chuckled at that, the young actress was quick to come back with her opinion.

“I love that there’s a lot more female leads nowadays, I think that’s so special, but we should have our own,” Ortega said. “I don’t like it when it’s like a spinoff — like I don’t want to see like ‘Jamie Bond.’ You know? I want to see just like, another badass.”

O’Hara was quick to agree with her, poking fun at how some twists are executed to introduce a new female protagonist.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hits theaters on Friday, September 6.

I've been saying this for years, when I have talked about black performers. Why do we need Idris Elba to play James Bond when a black superspy script should be developed for a black male (or female) actor to lead?

Hollywood is yet out of touch thinking that anyone who isn't white or male can't sell movies worldwide. We are in a time where people care more if a film is good rather than who is headlining it.

Also we don't give a damn about the small demo that loves to hide behind the "woke" term whining about a movie featuring anyone deemed a minority as a lead (black, female, Latino, or queer).

Instead of waiting for Hollywood to create the parts, it may be up to the talents like Jenna to create a production company and develop the content they want to see themselves in.
