Music fans weren't here for no hit wonder turned internet troll Azealia Banks fixing her yuck mouth to say that she's a better singer than Madonna. Not only that, but she had the NERVE to claim that the pop icon's three decade-old hit Vogue is trash.
“‘Vogue’ by Madonna is such a trash record just based on Madonna’s seriously limited vocal capabilities,” Azealia told her 136,000 followers on Twitter. “Martha Wash really should have sang [it]. She would have actually done it justice. I could even cover ‘Vogue’ and give it it’s jsut due in the place of the Gay Musical Lexicon.”
If you think that was blasphemous, she also tried to come for Madonna's vocals, which, let me remind some of you has even stated in past interviews that she's aware that she doesn't have the most spectacular voice.
“I’m a much better singer than Madonna,” she relayed before saying, “That song should not be sang by such a mid-vocalist. It’s like cheese that won’t melt.”
This isn't the first time Azealia has come for the queen. A few weeks ago when Katy Perry said in an Australian interview that every female should thank Madonna for paving the way for them to have the career they have today, Azealia took to social media to name a bunch of women who aesthetically and musically aren't doing what Madonna's doing as a way to diminish her legacy.
Here's what Katy said: "She's the greatest. She paved the way. Every person, when you talk about me reaching out to younger artists, every female still needs to continue to say 'thank you' to her cause she is breaking down barriers. I'm 40, I still get to do music because of Madonna."
Of course Madonna fans took issue with what Azealia said lightly and read her down to the floor.
"She’s so cringe. Yet she’ll never come to close to the artistic impact or influential iconic-ness that Madonna has," one user stated.
"Ok, well, get in the studio and let’s see where that career goes," another challenged.
"So that hypocrite called Azealia Banks just tweeted she’s releasing a new song. That’s why she’s talking sh*t about MADONNA to get some clout to boost her 6 streams," another speculated.
"Beyonce? Yes. Lil Kim? Yes she referred to herself as the Black Madonna. Janet? Took major inspo from Madonna’s “Erotica” album for her 1993 ‘Janet’ album…. And also most of these other artists you mentioned debuted before or at same time as Madonna. So ur point is mute anyways," another dished out.
Even after all the online dragging, Azealia continued to double down on her opinion.
"Why is it funny if it's the truth? We don't really see it for her or see her the way you do and that's okay. We have our own icons niece. You're gonna drive yourself insane being mad about it . / And this is not true because I see it for Britney hard. Madonna just doesn't do it for me okay? Okay. Now let's go to bed now child."
She also noted that she had only been a fan of three of Madonna's songs and that she looked up to "Beyonce Janet and Chaka than Madonna." However, the internet was not satisfied, as people began drawing up the rapper's old tweets of her favorite Madonna song, Love Profusion, to which she shot back in a lengthy paragraph:
"Again. This is one of the three songs I know. Yall really have to get over the fact that forever white female artists have been heralded as queens and trendsetters only because the media chooses to narrate women's history thru a white lens. I'm telling you ... and being completely honest... I Azealia Banks, am not nor have I ever been especially excited by or in awe of Madonna, sure this is a cool song, I play it maybe once every two years lol. I'm telling you, her music nor is whatever selective feminism she represents an integral piece to having inspired as many female artists as you think, nor changing any circumstances or knocking down barriers for anyone else but white women. Period."
Lastly, Banks paid homage to Donna Summer, and said the Disco icon is the one who laid the groundwork for displaying sexuality in pop music.
"'Love to love you baby' predates "like a virgin," and Donna has waaaaay more essential anthems, talent and essential influence as far as mothers of the girls go. It's okay if you do not agree. But you're not going to force me into parroting some cliche shit about Madonna being some force of nature because she's not. Sorry. Lol."
As I stated earlier Madonna makes no qualms about having the most spectacular voice. We know she can't blow like Aretha, Mariah, Celine or Whitney. She's not that type of artist. Madonna has taken what people deem as limitations and has made it work for her.
Plus during the Evita era, she put in the work and actually took vocal lessons, and actually became a better singer because of it.
Also, Madonna, who is a club kid who came up in the New York City party scene always had a knack for bringing the underground into the mainstream, which she did with ballroom culture.
The ballroom scene has always given Madonna her tens, while you're still appropriating the butch queen ballroom sound with your old ass EP 1992. This is the same tired cracked out troll that colonizes our sound as a cis black woman, but will call us faggots at the drop of a hat.
Also if you want to read Madonna about her singing, then why are her biggest hits and most of the fan favorites her ballads (Crazy For You, Live To Tell, Rain, I'll Remember, Oh Father, Bad Girl, Take A Bow, Bad Girl, Mer Girl, Frozen, etc).
She also has over 40 hits that span through her four decade career. Last I checked you have to have some kind of singing voice if you're able to hold such a title throughout a career that spans four decades.
So instead of getting on social media trolling when you can barely pay your rent, maybe try getting in the studio and working on actually getting yourself a hit that would actually go to #1.
Or better yet wash that wide mouth of yours out with that skin bleaching soap you create in your bathroom.
