I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel In The Works, Original Cast Returning

With the success of rebootquels such as Scream and Halloween, Sony is looking to breathe new life into the 90s horror franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, which also has original cast mates Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. returning.

via THR:

The project, which dips into the late ’90s nostalgia, is in the earliest stages of development, and talent deals have yet to be fully hammered out, according to sources. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder and directed Netflix’s Do Revenge, is on board to direct the follow-up to the 1997 slasher film in which four friends are hunted by a murderer after they cover up an accident in which someone was killed.

The original version, which starred Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Prinze and was scripted by Scream scribe, Kevin Williamson, grossed $125 million.

I Know What You Did Last Summer also remained in the top box office spot for three consecutive weeks and earned nominations at several awards shows, including the MTV Movie Awards and the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards.

The movie was followed by the sequels I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006). Hewitt and Prinze reprised their roles in the 1998 sequel, while the 2006 film featured a completely new cast. The property also spawned a streaming series on Amazon, which bowed in 2021. The films are based on the 1973 young-adult suspense novel by Lois Duncan.

The move comes as the Scream franchise has been successful at Paramount, with a mix of legacy characters and new stars populating the 2022 feature and the upcoming Scream 6.

While I love the concept of IKWYDLS, I have to say the films weren't that great. The original film had potential and was a slow burn, but things got cooking during the third act when the killer went after Sarah Michelle Gellar's character Helen (who arguably had the best death scene).

The rest of the cast did what they could with the material, but in my opinion it wasn't Scream scribe Kevin Williamson's strongest writing (and to think he wrote IKWYDLS before Scream became the huge hit it was at the time).

I had hoped the sequel would be better, but the film, which I heard was rushed into production after the success of the original turned out to be much worse.

Even Brandy, Mekhi Pfifer and Jack Black couldn't save the film from relentless plot holes and lackluster kills. It's also a bummer that we won't get Brandy back in the rebootquel, since the new film will be a direct sequel to the original.

Also the overall look of the fisherman needs to be updated, because the killer wasn't all that scary then, and in 2023 he'll just look silly to a younger audience.

While I'm excited to see JLH and Freddie reprise their roles for the nostalgia of it all, I'm going to side eye this news until I see the first trailer.
