In addition to a cinematic reboot in the works from director David Bruckner, now comes word that Hellraiser is being made into a TV series over at HBO.
The pilot is set to be directed by David Gordon Green (Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills) and he will also be directing the pilot and “several more initial episodes,” and Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus, Godzilla: King of the Monsters) is on board to write alongside Mark Verheiden (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Heroes”)!
Here are some details on the series courtesy of Deadline: “The idea is to create an elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology. It is by no means a remake, but rather assumes the past mythology to be a given. The centerpiece remains Pinhead, the pin cushion-headed merciless leader of the Cenobites, the former humans-turned-demons that live in an extra-dimensional realm and are activated through a puzzle box called the Lament Configuration. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep balance between good and evil.”
If the series can incorporate the spirit of Clive Barker’s vision to the small screen, and give us some cool looking Cenobite and demon make up as well as elaborate sets that could mimic the visual excellence of another HBO series Westworld, then I’m all in to check this series out.
Also since David Gordon Green and Michael Dougherty are behind this series, I trust that it’s going to be good, since I am a fan of Trick r Treat and the last Halloween movie.
And if the series is successful, hopefully we can get more of Clive Barker’s books turned into movies, TV shows or mini-series on whichever streaming service wins the bidding war, because quite honestly Stephen King shouldn’t be the only horror novelist who’s books get a revival on the big and small screen.
