HALLE BERRY TEASES POSSIBLE JOHN WICK SPINOFF

I don’t know if any of you know this, but I am a huge fan of the John Wick franchise. I’m also a huge fan of Halle Berry. So when I found out that she was cast in John Wick 3 as a former assassin who now resides as one of the managers of one of the international Continental branches in Casablancas, I was definitely intrigued to see what director Chad Stahelski had in store for her.

And boy did Berry’s Sofia deliver. Even though her appearance was brief, she made such an impressive mark on the film that I’d hoped we would see more of Sofia in future I stallments.

While promoting her new film Moonfall, Berry revealed that while she may not be appearing in John Wick 4 (which may be subtitled Hagakure), she did hint at a possible solo spinoff involving her character Sofia.

Here’s what she told IGN:

“Sofia’s not in the next ‘John Wick’ movie. There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in ‘John Wick,’ but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”

Berry added that starring in her own “John Wick” spinoff movie would be “putting some ointment on a little sore,” alluding to her James Bond spinoff movie that never happened. Berry played Bond girl Jinx opposite Pierce Brosnan in 2002’s “Die Another Day.” Bond producer Barbara Broccoli wanted to give Berry’s Jinx her own movie, but the studio balked at the intended $80 million budget and the project was killed.

“It was very disappointing,” Berry told Variety in September 2020 about losing her Bond spinoff movie. “It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”

I believe Berry getting her own spinoff movie would be a moment of redemption, because I really wanted a solo Jonx movie.

Now the question remains would a solo Sofia film do well at the box office? I think it would. Personally speaking I love assassin films with female characters at the center. I loved films like La Femme Nikita, Lucy, The Long Kiss Goodnight and Atomic Blonde, to name a few.

Also, if they’re developing a Ballerina movie based on a character in the John Wick universe (rumor has it that Ana de Armas, who I loved during her brief scene as a Colombian spy in No Time to Die is up for the lead role), Halle’s Sofia can get a solo film as well.

Plus the box office has shown time and time again that based on the subject matter, black people will come out and support their own. So fingers crossed that Chad and the team behind the John Wick franchise sets a Sofia solo movie in motion.
