The actress, 32, spoke exclusively with PEOPLE on Tuesday, Nov. 12, to discuss family, upcoming projects and her role in Murphy’s latest FX horror series, Grotesquerie.
When asked if the American Horror Story creator recognized her from her three-episode stint on his hit Fox show Glee, which ran from 2009 to 2015, Goodwin revealed that Murphy didn’t recognize her.
“Ryan had forgotten!” the Good Luck Charlie actress told PEOPLE with a laugh. “It's been so long since Ryan did Glee — he had no idea I was on the show. He was like, ‘Nice to meet you.’ I was like, ‘All right, bet.‘ ”
Goodwin went on to rave about Murphy and the show’s creative team.
“Seriously, I was so excited to be a part of the Ryan Murphy universe simply because I am [an] actual fan,” she explained. “Like I really do watch his work. Every time he puts something out, I'm watching it.”
“And for me to love the [Grotesquerie] script as much as I did, like, they did their thing — like the writers are incredible,” she continued. “They have incredible minds and so to kind of execute whatever they had in mind and to do it and make everybody happy and to get the job done the way I was supposed to get it done ... it meant a lot … So I'm excited. You know, I hope we can do more.”
The Being Mary Jane actress also dished on what it was like working with NFL star Travis Kelce in his first significant acting role.
"It's always funny to see people who haven't really been in the world come on set,” she said. “And they're like, ‘Oh, it's another angle. Oh, we got to wait 10 more hours for this one thing. Oh, okay.’ ”
“It's just so funny seeing how they kind of conceptualize what's going on around them because we get paid to wait — we don't get paid to act. So I think they forget about that part,” Goodwin added. “But he was super cool. You know, everything moved kind of fast and, you know, we got him out as soon as we could, but our days are long.”
Goodwin also recalled the surreal sensation of working with Kelce, 35, and costar Niecy Nash-Betts, 54, in one particularly dramatic scene.
“All of our experiences and career choices and paths just kind of meeting up,” she said, “And it was just kind of like, ‘Okay, we're doing this.’ But it was refreshing. It was fun. They both were absolutely breathtakingly good.”
“It was such a cool day. It was just like a cool day,” she continued. “It just felt like I was in a twilight zone. Like, what is really happening with my career right now? This is so cool.”
Grotesquerie follows a small-town detective Lois Tryon (Nash-Betts) as she attempts to solve a string of gruesome and seemingly personal murders.
Goodwin portrays Lois’ daughter, Merritt Tryon, who “is Lois’ rock, although her struggles with an eating disorder reveal a double standard that forces Lois to grapple with her own flaws,” per the show’s description of Merritt.
Goodwin most recently stars as Tiffany in the BET+ holiday movie Style Me for Christmas. The film, which was directed by LazRael Lison, follows “a boutique owner facing eviction at Christmas” who “gets the fashion assignment of a lifetime” when she's chosen to style a handsome playboy celebrity, per the official synopsis.
“I just feel like it's such a beautiful cast that [BET] brought together. I feel like the storyline is adorable. We all love that underdog redemption story. And that's what it is with Tiffany,” she told PEOPLE.
Style Me for Christmas is available steaming on BET+.
Maybe Ryan mistook Raven for Amber Riley.
