If you are a fan of The Real Housewives franchise, then you’re well aware that in different cities, the group cast promos always show the women holding an item that represents where they are from (NYC holds apples, ATL holds a peach, etc).
While the women of Beverly Hills are always shown holding a diamond, it looks like someone in Bravo’s marketing department is about to be unemployed, because in a new promo, the ladies are shown holding slices of watermelon.
The tweet, which has since been removed was to promote Harry Styles‘ new single Watermelon Sugar, which wouldn’t be a problem if actress Garcelle Beauvais — who is making history at the moment as the first black cast mate to join the Beverly Hills franchise wasn’t part of the cast.
And given the history attached to black people and watermelon, you’d think that Bravo would know better. Then again, this just shows that there’s probably a lack of diverse voices working behind the scenes at Bravo, because if you had someone black on your staff this would have never happened. I am curious if this was a decision made by Andy Cohen, who is an executive producer of the Real Housewives franchises. I’d be shocked if he gave the green light to this promo, especially since some of us are aware how he loves young black and Latino trade. Either way you slice it, this is just wrong on so many levels.
