Variety is reporting that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit, Broadway smash “Hamilton” will be heading to Disney Plus just in time for Independence Day,
The hip hop-infused look at Alexander Hamilton’s life and formative role in American history will now be released on the streaming service on July 3, roughly a year before it was supposed to debut. It had originally been slated for a theatrical release on Oct. 15, 2021 and Disney acquired the rights to film the stage play for $75 million.
Thomas Kail, the show’s director, shot three live performances of “Hamilton” featuring the original Broadway cast.
“I’m so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought ‘Hamilton’ to the screen. He’s given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,” Miranda said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney Plus for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4 weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it.”
Just like Miranda’s other hit Broadway play In The Heights (which was moved from this summer to June, 2021), there are plans to helm a big screen version of Hamilton, but there’s no word when that will happen. “Hamilton” swept the 2016 Tony Awards, picking up 11 prizes, including the statue for best musical. The show also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
I actually think this is not only a smart move by Disney+ to move it back a year, but a desperate move on their part due to the fact that there’s barely any content on the streaming service. Yes they have just about every MCU film on the docket, both Tron films as well as the short-lived animated series, and all the classic animated films, but other than The Mandalorian there’s really nothing worth watching on the streaming service. Say what you want about Netflix and they shitty way they market the 3,000 original shows and films, but at least for the most part there’s so much interesting content on Netflix that’s it’s keeping most of us occupied through these dire times. I’ve also wanted to see Hamilton during it’s Broadway run, but it was very difficult to get tickets. I’m glad that I have Disney+ because now i’ll be able to see it.
