Fans of The Old Guard will be pleased to learn that Netflix has finally set the release date for its long-awaited sequel. Starring Charlize Theron in the lead role, the 2020 original adapted Greg Rucka's comic book of the same name and debuted to positive critical and audience reception.

Per Netflix, The Old Guard 2 will premiere on the platform this summer on July 2. Franchise creator Rucka returns to pen the script of the eagerly anticipated sequel that will again follow Theron's character, Andromache 'Andy' of Scythia, as she confronts a formidable new enemy. Victoria Mahoney replaces Gina Prince-Bythewood in the director's chair for The Old Guard 2, which also stars Uma Thurman, Chiwetel Ejiofor, KiKi Layne, Marzan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Henry Golding.

Additionally, a teaser has been released for the movie, and it can bbe seen below.

The release date announcement follows Theron's update last year regarding the long-gestating follow-up film, explaining why the project has taken so long to see the light of day. Due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, The Old Guard 2's post-production process faced multiple issues. “Netflix went through quite a changeover,” she said. “We got kind of stuck in that and our post-production shut down, I think, five weeks into it."

The Mad Max: Fury Road and Fast X actor, however, insisted that the movie would eventually premiere and that she was excited to share The Old Guard 2 with fans. "They were going through a lot of changes, and I totally understand it. We finally picked it back up, and I'm really excited about it," she said. “It’s really good. It's a really important film for us. I only wanted to do it if we could make it amazing. I really love this movie."

The South African actor did indeed give her all to the upcoming superhero sequel, requiring shoulder surgery following her training for The Old Guard 2.

2020's The Old Guard, which had Rucka as screenwriter alongside director Prince-Bythewood, features Theron's Andy as the leader of a group of superhero-like immortals who face the threat of an antagonistic pharmaceutical titan looking to replicate their DNA for nefarious means. In addition to Harry Melling and Veronica Ngo, the movie also starred Layne, Schoenaerts, Kenzari, Marinelli, and Ejiofor, who will all return in the sequel. The Old Guard was a hit for Netflix and holds an 80% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Old Guard is currently streaming on Netflix and The Old Guard 2 will arrive on the platform on July 2, 2025.
