After Sarah Michelle Gellar recently revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she has changed her tune regarding reprising her role as the iconic Buffy Summers in a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, Hollywood scooper Daniel RPK is revealing that discussions are happening.
Here's what she said back in 2023 when asked if she would be interested in coming back for a Buffy reboot: “I am very proud of the show that we created, and it doesn’t need to be done. We wrapped that up,” Gellar told SFX Magazine, as per CBR.
“I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl, who has the power can have the power.’
“It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
Gellar also recently appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show, where she explained her reasons for previously shying away from a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. “It’s funny. I always used to say no because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect.”
Gellar added that other spin-off series like And Just Like That and her involvement in the Dexter prequel, Dexter: Original Sin, gave her a different perspective.
“[It] definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe,” she said. “It could be anything. It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”
As I stated on my podcast, I'm actually down for Sarah coming back as Buffy if they have an interesting story to tell. Maybe they could have her as a single mother who still battles vampires and the big bad while trying to raise a teen or teenagers. I was also thinking that maybe they could make her a watcher (a la Giles) but still fights vampires.
I'm still keen on the idea of Zendaya coming in as a new Buffy, and they could set the series in a metropolitan area instead of the suburbs. Don't bring Buffy back for nostalgia sake, but you're not able to find a way to evolve the character.
I should point out that there are a few dangling issues with a Buffy reboot, though. There have been numerous attempts at rejiggering the character for an animated series or more spin-off shows and movies, à la Angel, but a new Chosen One was never selected.
That became harder as series creator Joss Whedon became embroiled in numerous controversies that discredited a career of overtly feminist work.
In 2018, Joss Whedon, who had become persona non grata in Hollywood following multiple allegations of sexism, abuse, and infidelity from his ex-wife and co-workers, announced that he was working on a reboot with Monica Owusu-Breen. Four years later, the project was reported as “on pause.”
