BREAKING! RUBY ROSE EXITS BATWOMAN

Now I did not see this coming. The Hollywood Reporter just revealed that days after the show’s season finale, Ruby Rose, who plays the lead on the freshmen CW series Batwoman is leaving the show after one season. Batwoman will return next season, so the lead role will obviously have to be recast.

“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose said in a statement “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

“I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created,” she said. “Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”

There’s no word on why she’s decided to leave the show, and I don’t think it has anything to do with an on-set injury where she faced paralysis and had to get emergency surgery on her neck. However, from an actor’s standpoint I did not think she was the right choice to play Batwoman. While I love that they had an openly gay actor portraying an openly gay superhero, I personally don’t think Ruby is a great actress.

For season 2 I think they should either cast Adrienne Palicki (John Wick), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious films) Evan Rachel Wood (Westworld) Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck), or Tessa Thompson (Westworld).

Even though Tessa is no stranger to playing a queer superhero (as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love & Thunder), I don’t think Evan or Tessa will want to be part of a show that would have them working 16 hour days on a 22 episode season, especially since Evan may return to Westworld season 4 (in the end credits of season 3 Tessa’s character plays a key role in the next season), so I’m really pulling for Palicki. Batwoman season 2 is set to premiere sometime in 2021.
