Sony hit CinemaCon attendees from off the top rope on Monday night by announcing that an El Muerto movie is currently in development. Sony head Tom Rothman also took the occasion to announce that new instalments of Venom and Ghostbusters are on the way, but didn’t offer any further details.
While speaking about El Meurto, Sony brought Bad Bunny on-stage to discuss his solo MCU-affiliated pic, which is set for January 12, 2024.
“I love wrestling! I grew up watching wrestling, and now I’m a wrestler. It’s the perfect role for me – it’ll be epic,” Bad Bunny said about his upcoming role as the obscure Marvel character.
In the comics, the character of El Muerto, aka Juan Carlos is a wrestler whose powers come from his lucha libre mask. The character has appeared in Spider-Man stories, and the film is the latest in Sony’s portfolio of characters from the extended Spider-Man universe. They’ve recently been behind the Tom Holland-starring Spider-Man films, plus Venom and Morbius. Sony’s future projects include Kraven the Hunter (starring Aaron Taylor Johnson) and Madame Web (starring Dakota Johnson).
El Muerto’s arrival marks the first Latin superhero to get a film in Sony’s Marvel Universe.
While I am a huge fan of Bad Bunny’s music, and although he’s not bad as an actor, I don’t know how I feel about this news.
Sony has disappointed me with both Venom films, and Morbius was trash. The only reason the Tom Holland Spider-Man films were good is because the MCU helped make those films watchable.
I’ll wait until I see a trailer to give my full opinion, but I’m not holding my breath for this film to be any good
