Azealia Banks Discredits Madonna's Legacy in Response To Katy Perry Saying All Female Artists Need To Thank Her

On September 25, Katy Perry appeared on an Australian talk show called The Project, and opened up about Madonna's influence on her career.

"She’s the greatest. She paved the way. Every person, when you talk about me reaching out to younger artists, every female still needs to continue to say ‘thank you’ to her cause she is breaking down barriers. I’m 40, I still get to do music because of Madonna.”

Not long after the video went viral, no-hit wonder turned internet troll Azealia Banks took to social media and wasted no time discrediting the queen of pop's impactful stamp on pop culture.

“Grace Jones, Lil’ Kim, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Teena Marie, Celine Dion, Björk, Missy Elliott, Toni Braxton, Spice (JA), Eve, and especially Janet Jackson owe Madonna nothing.”

Azealia wasn't the only one who took issue with what Katy said, as others took to Twitter to weigh in on her comment:

"In reality they need to be thanking DONNA SUMMER" an X user stated Donna Summer deserved to be thanked in place of Madonna.

"Add…Roxanna Shante, Mia X, Phyllis Hyman, Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Patrice Rushon, Angela Winbush, Cheryl Ladd, Angela Bofill,, Patti Austin, Stacey Lattisaw, Barbara Streisand, Evelyn Champagne King, Cheryl Pepsi Reilly, Chantal Moore, Lisa Stansfield, Belinda Carlisle, Lisa Fisher and Pat Benatar.." another X user added a list of singers to support Azealia's point

It wasn't all doom and gloom as some actually sided with Katy, and got what she was saying:

"Beyonce? Yes. Lil Kim? Yes she referred to herself as the Black Madonna. Janet? Took major inspo from Madonna’s “Erotica” album for her 1993 ‘Janet’ album…. And also most of these other artists you mentioned debuted before or at same time as Madonna. So ur point is mute anyways" an internet user mentioned

"Yes, but none of them are the Queen of Pop. Madonna is and will forever be, the Queen of pop." another internet user stated.

"you leaving gaga out intentionally. heal girl" an X user referred to Azealia Banks accusing Gaga for snatching her work for the ARTPOP album in 2013.

A friend of mine Derrick Kardos summed it all up with the following comment: "Madonna's revolution was so complete that it has now become our default world. But I was alive before madonna. and the top 40 was straight white male rock bands. Female disco singers were at the bottom of the Entertainment industry totem pole. they were considered a joke, like cher, or fringe, like grace jones.

Madonna changed all of that. who dominates the charts now? solo female dance music singers.

before madonna the music industry didn't even think a solo female artist would be capable of a world stadium tour let alone selling one out.

Madonna changed all that with her virgin tour. and the one after that. and the one after that.

Madonna changed everything."

Madonna may not have been all of their inspiration, especially those who came before her, but you can’t deny Madonnas influence and trailblazing for every artist after her, and maybe some of the mentioned artists who were making music in the 80s.

So when people try to discredit how she changed the way the industry looks at solo female pop acts, and the way artists tour in regards to their shows telling a story, I agree with Katy that women in pop need to thank her.
