After giving me my life last month when he released his fun dance track This Was My House, Out singer/songwriter Bright Light Bright Light is back quenching our quarantined musical thirsts with a brand new dance track entitled Sensation, which he duets with Scissor Sister and fellow queer pop artist Sister Jake Shears.
“Sensation” has an 80s dance-pop vibe with a bit of classic queer disco, that you would hear from queer icons like the legendary Sylvester. Like his previous single, Bright Light Bright Light also recorded Sensation on the empty dance floor of East Village gay club Bedlam, a venue that once hosted Sylvester and groups like Erasure. Speaking of which, Erasure front man Andy Bell as well as trans icon Justin Vivienne Bond and Mark Gatsiss will be making vocal appearances on BLBL’s upcoming album.
I also just heard that Bedlam owner Daniel Nardicio is looking to sell Bedlam due to COVID-19 shutting down all bars and night cubs. The good news is knowing the cultural significance of Bedlam, Nardicio is hoping someone queer buys the venue.
“For a song about connection and celebrating who you are, Jake was totally my top choice, Bright Light Bright Light revealed about the collaboration. “It was so much fun to do a proper duet and have a voice that reminded me to be myself on a song about celebrating your community.” Both Shears and Bright Light Bright Light identify as queer.
“Rod’s songwriting always blows me away, and getting to record with him is an absolute joy,” Shears says of the tune. “‘Sensation’ was just one of those songs, the first time I heard it, I was like— I flipping love this.”
Sensation is the second single release off Bright Light Bright Light’s upcoming album Fun City, which drops in September.
