Less than 24 hours after it was announced that Beyoncé would be dropping Break My Soul, the first single off her forthcoming album Renaissance at Midnight, the song has hit the interwebs a few hours early.
The uptempo track, produced by Tricky Stewart & The Dream (Single Ladies) is a cross between 90s Chicago house, mixed with New Orleans Bounce. In fact, Queen of Bounce herself Big Freedia's voice could be heard periodically on the track as Bey samples Freedia's hit Explode.
Here's what Freedia had to say about Beyoncé including her on another track of hers: “It feels surreal to be on the track with the Queen Beyonce once again I’m so honored to be apart of this special moment I’m forever grateful lord. someone please catch me. [Blaqnmild] my brother and I been working along time congratulations fam. [Beyonce] love you so much.” Freedia also added in an Instagram Story, “Overwhelmed with tears of joy. my God is so real the things he can do in your life. only if y’all know where I come from and how hard this journey has been I’m forever grateful thanks so much for loving me for who l am. this for all of y’all.”
While Break My Soul doesn't reinvent the wheel (the track also samples the iconic 90s dance hit Show Me Love by Robin S), it definitely gets the party started.
With Drake releasing his dance heavy album Honestly, Nevermind three days ago, and reports stating that Beyoncé's upcoming album will contain a heavy dance and country influence, it seems that house music and ballroom beats are creeping back into the mainstream.
Renaissance drops on July 29.
