Outspoken actor, comic and TV personality Amanda Seales revealed yesterday that after six months, she has decided not to renew her contract with The Real for another season.
Well you know what happened to me today – I have arrived because my contract is up at The Real and I didn’t renew it, because it doesn’t feel good to my soul to be at a place where I can not, speak to my people the way they need to be spoken to. And where the people that are speaking to me in despairing ways are not being handled.
She continues:
I’m not at a space where as a full black woman I can have my voice and my co-workers also have their voices and where the people at the top are not respecting the necessity for black voices to be at the top too.
I applaud Amanda for stepping out of her comfort zone and putting herself out there on a big platform, but honestly I think she was just too real for The Real. Fans were hesitant when she first joined the show, because she refused to shy away from giving her opinion about hot button topics regarding race.
Amanda is someone who is an independent thinker with a strong personality, and when you can put yourself out there as someone who wants to be a truth teller and not someone who wants to sell viewers surfaced propaganda so that you don’t offend TV execs and advertisers, eventually, you find yourself in a David vs Goliath situation.
The Real
I don’t think her issues are with the ladies on the show (as of this printing she is still following co-hosts Jeannie Mai, Tamera Mowry and Adrienne Bailon). I think Amanda’s beef is with the network and the people who work behind the scenes of the show.
Since the network and fans don’t want women of color on the show to speak boldly about issues that affect our community, Amanda can continue doing stand-up, appearing on Insecure, using her popular podcast Small Doses to go into further detail as to why she left The Real, and continue to speak her mind on issues that affect the community. She doesn’t need that tired ass show.
